One Small Hello: Beginning a Prayer Habit for the New Year

4 min read

Over the last couple of months, my YouTube feed has been full of videos about New Year goals—productivity hacks, morning routines, habit stacks, all of it. And as a Christian, I know one goal that always seems to make the list: I want to pray more. I used to add it every single year.

And like any other goal, we usually start by researching how to achieve it. We look for the right routines, the right time blocks, the right hacks. But when it comes to prayer, we actually have something better than a strategy list. We have Scripture—full of real people who prayed in real moments.

Some praised God, like Zechariah in Luke 1:68.

Some prayed with deep bitterness and longing, like Hannah in 1 Samuel 1.

Some cried out in desperation, like David in Psalm 18:6: “In my distress I called upon the LORD, and cried unto my God.”

Prayer in the Bible is raw, honest, varied, and deeply human.

And then we read verses like 1 Thessalonians 5:17, which tells us to pray without ceasing. If you’ve ever struggled to stick to a goal, that can feel impossible. Pray… all the time? What does that even look like?

The good news is: prayer isn’t a performance. It isn’t a speech. It isn’t about sounding spiritual or impressive. Jesus even warns us in Matthew 6:7 not to “babble on and on” as if repetition makes our prayers more powerful.

Prayer is simply talking to God—honestly, simply, from the heart.

🌼 If You’ve Struggled With Goals Before, Start Small

If your goal for 2026 is to make prayer a habit—and if you’ve had trouble sticking to goals in the past—give yourself permission to start small. Tiny, even.

Building a prayer habit isn’t about achieving a spiritual milestone. It’s about strengthening your relationship with God, one honest moment at a time.

Think about how you build a friendship. You don’t start with long, deep conversations every day. You start with small interactions—checking in, sharing something funny, asking a question, sending a message. Over time, those small moments build trust and closeness.

It’s the same with God.

Start by telling Him something small that happened in your day.

If you had a frustrating moment at work, tell Him.

When you wake up, simply say, “Good morning, Lord.”

On your commute, talk to Him about the weather or what’s on your mind.

At lunch, check in: “I’m here, God.”

Thank Him for the little things—the job you have, the roof over your head, the meal in front of you.

These small moments matter.

🌿 Prayer Doesn’t Need to Be Long—It Needs to Be Honest

One of the clearest examples Jesus gives us about prayer is the story of the Pharisee and the tax collector in Luke 18.

The Pharisee stood confidently and prayed about himself—boasting about his fasting, his giving, his righteousness. His prayer was long, polished, and full of self-congratulation.

But the tax collector?

He stood at a distance.

He wouldn’t even lift his eyes to heaven.

He beat his chest and said only a few words:

“God, be merciful to me, a sinner.”

Fewer words.

Less performance.

More honesty.

And Jesus says it was the tax collector—not the Pharisee—who went home justified.

This is the heart of prayer. Not eloquence. Not length. Not perfection. Just sincerity.

So if you’re starting small this year, you’re already in good company. God isn’t looking for impressive speeches. He’s looking for your heart.

Before you close this post, take one small step toward the prayer habit you want to build in 2026. Pause for a moment and talk to God—one sentence, one thought, one honest breath. It doesn’t need to be long. It just needs to be real.

Challenge for the next 30 days:

Set a daily reminder on your phone that simply asks,

“Have you said hello to God today?”

Let that gentle nudge become a doorway into a growing rhythm with Him.

And if you’d like a place to begin, pray with me:

Father, I’ve decided that one of my goals this year is to pray more. You know how often I’ve struggled to finish the goals I set, but I don’t want that to stop me from growing in this one. I’m coming to You for help.

Teach me to see prayer differently.

Remind me to simply say hello.

Shape my life into a prayerful one—where talking to You becomes as natural as breathing, something my heart does without effort or fear.

Draw me closer, Father, one small moment at a time. Amen.
