Do You Trust God?
Obedience and hesitation are two themes the Lord has been teaching me about over the last several months. I’ve been trying to adopt a simple mindset: “Don’t think — just do” when the Father gives me an instruction.
But that mindset made me pause and ask a deeper question:
Why do we hesitate so much when it comes to God and what He asks of us?
Do we not trust Him?
Do we secretly believe He might embarrass us?
Do we think He’s setting us up to fail or keeping us stuck where we are?
These questions might sound dramatic, but they’re actually very honest. At some point, we all need to audit our relationship with God. If we truly believe that the Father loved us so much that He gave His only begotten Son to die for our sins — so we could spend eternity with Him — then why do we hesitate when He says “go”?
I’ve written before about people like the Apostle Paul and the prophetess Deborah — people who didn’t hesitate. But I’m realising I haven’t explored the why behind hesitation deeply enough. And we need to, because hesitation reveals something about our view of God.
The Parable That Exposes Our Fear
In Matthew 25:14–30, Jesus tells the Parable of the Talents. A master gives three servants different amounts of money to steward while he’s away. When he returns, two servants have multiplied what they were given — but the third servant buried his talent in the ground.
Why?
His answer is painfully revealing:
“Master, I knew you to be a hard man… so I was afraid, and I went and hid your talent in the ground.”
He didn’t act because he didn’t trust the character of the one who gave the instruction.
And honestly?
We may not say we see God this way, but we often behave like that servant. God gives us an instruction, and instead of obeying, we delay, avoid, or do nothing at all.
Is God Lying to Us?
When God says:
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart… and He will make straight your paths.”
(Proverbs 3:5–6)
Is He lying?
When He says:
“If you are willing and obedient, you shall eat the good of the land.”
(Isaiah 1:19)
Is He lying?
No.
Numbers 23:19 tells us plainly:
“God is not a man, that He should lie… Has He ever spoken and failed to act?”
Jesus Himself asks:
“Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you?”
(Luke 6:46)
It’s a confronting question — but a loving one. God isn’t trying to shame us. He’s trying to free us from the fear that keeps us stuck.
God Wants You to Succeed
Scripture is full of reminders that God’s intentions toward us are good:
“For I know the plans I have for you… plans for good and not for disaster.”
(Jeremiah 29:11–13)
“We love because He first loved us.”
(1 John 4:19)
“He who did not spare His own Son… how will He not also graciously give us all things?”
(Romans 8:32)
God is not withholding from you. He is not setting you up to fail. He is not playing games with your destiny.
Look at the Pattern of Scripture
When you open the Bible, you see a consistent pattern:
• Abraham and Sarah obeyed, and God fulfilled His promise.
• Gideon, with only 300 men, defeated the Midianites because he trusted God’s instruction.
• Joshua led Israel into the promised land because he followed God’s command.
• Nehemiah rebuilt the wall because he acted on what God told him to do.
Every one of them had a moment where obedience required trust — and God proved Himself faithful.
So friend, if obedience is something you’ve been struggling with — if hesitation has felt safer than stepping out — I pray these scriptures have given you something to reflect on. Ask the Lord to show you where fear has been speaking louder than His voice.
Let go of the fear.
God is not human.
He is not like the people who have failed you, disappointed you, or wounded you.
He is faithful.
He is trustworthy.
And He will not call you to something only to abandon you in the middle of it.
Your obedience is safe with Him.
Scripture Meditation
Choose one of the scriptures from this post — Proverbs 3:5–6, Isaiah 1:19, or Numbers 23:19 — and meditate on it this week.
Let the truth of God’s character slowly dismantle the fear that has been holding you back.
Lord,
You see every place in my heart where hesitation has taken root. You know the fears I carry, the memories that make obedience feel risky, and the moments where I’ve trusted my own understanding more than Your voice.
Today, I surrender those fears to You.
Teach me to trust You again — not as I’ve trusted people who have failed me, but as the God who never lies, never changes, and never abandons His children. Remind me of who You are: faithful, steady, and good in all Your ways.
Where I have buried what You’ve given me, help me to uncover it.
Where I have delayed, help me to step forward.
Where I have doubted, help me to believe that Your plans for me are good.
Make my heart quick to obey and slow to fear.
Make my steps bold, not because I am strong, but because You are trustworthy.
My obedience is safe with You.
And I choose to trust You today.
Amen.
